What Is Ranking?

Ranking is your web sites position in the list of results for a given query in a search engine. A query would involve someone searching for something they want. They type in what they are looking for such as your product.

These words they type in are called the key phrase. So when some one is talking about ranking it is related to a specific search engine and key phrase. For example you may be ranked third at Google for your product. These rankings are constantly changing so you are shooting at moving target. The changes are seldom drastic so your web site may only go up or down one or two positions in the list.

Search engines rank pages not web sites. Write good content for each page, give it a relevant, descriptive title. Use this title in the meta tags. Use different relevant title and meta tags for each page. Never use home for a page title.
